12 Steps to prepare your RV for camping season

Scroll

If you are an RV enthusiast, you’ve likely been looking forward to dusting off your recreational vehicle or trailer and enjoying the open air!  Or maybe you’re one of the brave ones that took their chances on May long weekend and already did!

Our friends at AVIVA Insurance have put together a handy checklist to help ensure your RV is fresh, safe and ready for this season’s adventures!

12 steps to prepare your RV for the camping season:

  1. Throw open all doors and windows to fill the space with fresh air while you inspect and start up your RV.
  2. Open all interior doors, drawers and compartments to check for mice or other pests.
  3. Clean and disinfect, as necessary  (and make a note to include pest control as part of your shutdown process in the fall).
  4. Test the smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector.
  5. Lubricate slides and windows with a product designed to protect against corrosion and extend the life of your RV.
  6. Check the function of the:
    Propane tank
    Furnace
    Refrigerator
    Air conditioner
    Electrical system
    Wastewater system
  7. Roll out the awning and sweep off leaves or other debris that may have collected over the winter.
  8. Flush out the pipes with air and then run fresh water through to ensure you have safe, potable water.
  9. Wash all bedding, towels and curtains. Take any cushions and decorative pillows outside to help remove any musty odors.
  10. Vacuum and wash carpets and floors.
  11. Wash blinds and clean windows.
  12. Make sure the RV is stocked with supplies you’ll use all season, such as:
    First aid kit
    Flashlights
    Fire extinguisher
    Kitchen and bathroom essentials
